How to Cure Cannabis Buds in Jars

Posted On 10/29/2026 By QCS

Curing is the slow, controlled stage after drying that smooths the smoke, deepens the aroma and evens out moisture inside the buds. It is simple, but it rewards patience: a few weeks in sealed jars, opened briefly at regular intervals, make a clear difference to the final result.

Curing

Dry first, then cure slowly

A few weeks in sealed jars lets moisture even out and harsh smells fade.

Dry properly before you cure

Buds are ready for jars when the small stems snap instead of bending and the outside feels dry, while the inside still holds a little moisture. Jarring buds that are too wet risks mold, and buds that are too dry lose aroma. If you need a hand with the drying stage, see our guides to drying weed faster and drying buds without hanging them. A cool room at roughly 55–60% humidity suits slow drying; our notes on temperature and humidity give the full ranges.

Curing step by step

WhenWhat to do
Day 1Fill glass jars about three-quarters full with trimmed buds, without packing them down, and close the lids
Days 1–7Open each jar for 10 to 15 minutes once or twice a day (“burping”) to release moisture and let in fresh air
Week 2Burp every two to three days
Weeks 3–4Burp about once a week; the aroma should be stronger and the buds evenly dry
After 4 weeksStore the jars in a cool, dark place and open them only occasionally

Humidity and temperature

Aim for about 58–62% humidity inside the jar. A small hygrometer inside one jar makes this easy to check, and two-way humidity packs help hold the target. If the reading climbs above about 65%, leave the jar open for a few hours; if it drops below about 55%, add a humidity pack. Keep jars away from light at a steady 15–21 °C.

Troubleshooting

ProblemLikely causeWhat to do
Hay or grass smellDried too fast, or not cured long enoughKeep burping and give the buds more time
Ammonia smellJarred while still too wetSpread the buds on a screen for several hours, then jar them again; check them closely for mold
Fuzzy gray or white patchesToo much moistureRemove affected buds and throw them away, check the rest, and do not use moldy buds
Dry, brittle budsOver-dried before jarringAdd a humidity pack and re-check after a day or two

Some aroma is lost if buds dry out completely, so it is better to stop drying a little early than too late. Dense buds hold moisture longer than airy ones, so check them more closely during the first week.

Common questions

How long should I cure cannabis? At least two weeks, and many growers go for four weeks or more. Aroma and smoothness often keep improving for a month or two when the buds are stored well.

Can I cure cannabis without jars? Glass jars are the simplest option. Food-grade containers or dedicated curing boxes can also work, but avoid plastic bags, which hold moisture and odor poorly.

What does burping mean? Opening the jar briefly so that moisture escapes and fresh air gets in. It keeps humidity in range and lowers the risk of mold.

Does curing make cannabis stronger? Not really. Curing mainly improves aroma, flavor and smoothness. It cannot make a weak variety strong.

How do I know the buds are dry enough to cure? The small stems should snap instead of bending, and the buds should feel dry on the outside without crumbling to dust.
