A note on the numbers in this article: harvest dates, flowering times and yields are ranges, not promises. They vary depending on growing conditions: the grower, the method and the season's weather. "Mold resistant" means mold tolerant: less prone to mold and slower to be affected. No strain is 100% mold resistant. How we set these numbers →

Which Gelato should you grow?

For the classic: Gelato or Gelato 33. Both come straight from the original Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC cross. They are also the earliest of the photoperiod Gelatos outdoors, ready from late September.

For the highest THC: Frosted Gelato, at 27 to 30%. It is also the heaviest yielder of the seven, at 650 to 750 g/m² indoors and 850 g per plant outdoors, and it is easy to grow.

For flavour: Animal Gelato. It tastes of sweet cream, ripe berries and citrus, with a light spice and a skunky note underneath.

For a milder plant: Gelato Ice Cream, with 16 to 21% THC and 2% CBD.

For a grape note: Gelato × GrandDaddy Purple, which adds the grape-like aroma of GrandDaddy Purple to Gelato's sweet cream.

For a first grow or a short season: Gelato Autoflower. It flowers on its own and is easy to grow.

Where to start

Three Gelatos, three reasons

Growing Gelato outdoors in Canada

Gelato strains finish late. Outdoors, the photoperiod Gelatos are ready between late September and mid-October. October brings night frosts in much of Canada, and a late plant has to resist mould.

If your season is short, choose Gelato or Gelato 33, the two earliest, or grow Gelato Autoflower, which does not wait for the days to shorten. If your fall stays mild, any of the seven can finish. For more early strains, see our September harvest seeds.

Indoors, the season does not matter. Most of these strains flower in 8 to 9 weeks.
