What is Animal Gelato?

We created Animal Gelato here in Quebec by crossing Gelato, Animal Cookies, Grape Pie and Afghani Skunk: Gelato × Animal Cookies × Grape Pie × Afghani Skunk. It is an even 50/50 hybrid, and it comes only from Quebec Cannabis Seeds.

Searching for the Animal Gelato strain on Leafly, AllBud or other listing sites? Strain names are not protected, so listings elsewhere can describe different crosses. Everything on this page describes the QCS original. If you are weighing it against its parent, see our Gelato strain guide or browse Gelato feminized seeds.

Is Animal Gelato indica or sativa?

It is a true 50/50 hybrid, and growers’ reports reflect it. One grower found it indica-dominant, bushy and as wide as it was tall, with compact, frosty buds. Another had a more sativa-leaning plant that almost tripled in height in the stretch. Expect some phenotype variation from a pack of seeds.

Smell and flavour: sweet cream, berries and a skunky edge

Animal Gelato delivers sweet cream and vanilla, ripe berries and citrus, with a light spice that lingers and a skunky note underneath. Customers describe the same range in their own words: fruity and gassy, diesel and skunk after a week of cure, a soft cake-like taste, and one grower even compared the complex aroma to Pre-98 Bubba.

Appearance: resinous, frosty and purple late in flower

Resin is the first thing growers mention — one called it the most resinous plant they had ever grown, even more than OG Kush. Several also report purple hues that come out later in flower, as in the photo below, with compact, frosty buds.

Animal Gelato effects

The effect is euphoric and creative, with a strong, relaxing body. Customers call it potent but balanced and not for novices; one grower called it his all-day favourite, another said it is a “zone out” strain. As always, how a strain feels depends on the person, the dose and how it was grown.

How strong is Animal Gelato? THC content

Animal Gelato delivers 24 to 27% THC and about 1% CBD, depending on the growing conditions. That is a high-potency range, so if you are new to it, start low.

Growing Animal Gelato: flowering time and yield

Animal Gelato reaches a medium height, which suits most indoor spaces, and its Afghani Skunk side adds resilience and sturdy growth. Indoors it flowers in 65 to 75 days and yields up to 525 g/m². Outdoors it is typically ready in early to mid-October, with about 700 g per plant under good conditions. Those are ranges, not promises. No strain is ever fully mould resistant, and in a wet autumn dense, resinous flowers need good airflow and regular checks.

Indoor is measured per m², outdoor per plant — the two figures aren’t directly comparable. Real grower results vary widely.

What growers report

We would rather give you the whole picture, so here is what customers wrote on the Animal Gelato product page (21 reviews, rated 4.9 out of 5 at the time of writing), plus a few outdoor reports from growers who tagged us.

  • Stretch and structure: several growers warn that it stretches a lot in early flower. One plant nearly tripled in height, another grew 6 to 7 feet and needed lots of trimming, and one grower found the heavy buds drooped late in flower until they added a trellis. The tight nodes mean topping works well, but one grower who topped three times advises giving it time in veg before flipping to 12/12.
  • Timing: one indoor grower had it ready in about 55 days with amber trichomes; another finished a little past 70 days; a third found flowering long and told others not to be in a hurry. Watch the trichomes, not the calendar.
  • Yields indoors: one grower pulled about 1.5 lb from a 4×8 ft DWC space. Another harvested 35 g from a small plant in a tent, and a pot grower said yield was modest.
  • Yields outdoors: results were mixed. A Nova Scotia grower got minimal yield outdoors from April to the end of October, found two different phenotypes in five plants (one with long branches and big purple colas) and said clones grown indoors did far better. An Ontario grower cut Animal Gelato on October 13 after a wet fall with powdery mildew and some bud rot in the garden.
  • Care: one repeat grower says it can be a little touchy — water from the bottom when repotting to avoid root rot, and add nutrients slowly.

The takeaway: Animal Gelato rewards a grower who trains it and gives it room, and it is happiest indoors or in a long, dry season. That is why we rate it moderate. Germination was reported as 100% by growers in two reviews.

Animal Gelato: frequently asked questions

How long does Animal Gelato take to flower?

65 to 75 days (about 9 to 11 weeks) indoors. Outdoors it is typically ready in early to mid-October. Growers on our product page report anything from about 55 days to a bit over 70, so judge by the trichomes rather than the calendar.

How much does Animal Gelato yield?

Up to 525 g/m² indoors and about 700 g per plant outdoors, depending on growing conditions. These are best-case ranges: some outdoor growers in short or wet seasons reported much less, so treat them as a ceiling, not a promise.

How strong is Animal Gelato?

It has 24 to 27% THC and about 1% CBD. Customers describe it as strong but balanced, and not for novices.

Is Animal Gelato indica or sativa?

It is an even hybrid: 50% indica and 50% sativa. Growers report both leanings — some plants are bushy and indica-like, others stretch a lot like a sativa — so expect some phenotype variation.

What are the effects of Animal Gelato?

Euphoric and creative, with a strong, relaxing body effect. Customers call it an all-day favourite at low doses and a “zone out” strain at higher ones. Effects vary with the person, the dose and how the plant was grown.

Is Animal Gelato easy to grow?

It is rated moderate, so it suits growers with some experience. Plants reach a medium height but can stretch a lot in early flower, so top and train them and plan a trellis for the heavy buds. Growers also advise watering gently and feeding slowly.

What are the genetics of Animal Gelato?

Gelato × Animal Cookies × Grape Pie × Afghani Skunk — an original QCS cross bred in Quebec. The Afghani Skunk side adds resilience and sturdy growth.

What does Animal Gelato smell and taste like?

Sweet cream and vanilla, ripe berries and citrus, with a light spice and a skunky note underneath. Growers also mention fruity, gassy, diesel and cake-like notes.

Is Animal Gelato the same as Gelato or Animal Cookies?

No. Gelato and Animal Cookies are two of its parents. Animal Gelato is our own cross that also brings in Grape Pie and Afghani Skunk. Strain names are not protected, so listings on other sites can describe different crosses — this review is about the QCS original.
